Iranian authorities on Wednesday, executed a man convicted of espionage for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, according to the country’s judiciary.

The judiciary’s Mizan Online platform identified the man as Babak Shahbazi, stating that he was hanged after the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence. Shahbazi was convicted of the capital crimes of “corruption on earth” and “waging war against God.”

The execution shows Tehran’s heightened crackdown on espionage since the escalation of hostilities with Israel in June. In August, Iran executed Roozbeh Vadi, an employee of a subsidiary of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, after convicting him of leaking information about nuclear scientists and facilities.

Just weeks earlier, in July, Iran’s intelligence services announced the arrest of more than 20 alleged Mossad operatives, including spies and support agents, in Tehran and several provinces.
