Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has questioned President Bola Tinubu over his client’s prolonged detention despite several court rulings ordering his release.
Ejimakor, in a post via X on Friday, questioned why the federal government has refused to comply with multiple judgments delivered in Kanu’s favour since 2022.
He noted that in January 2022, a court ordered the Federal Government to pay Kanu N1 billion and apologize to him. In October 2022, another court nullified his detention and awarded N500 million in damages; while in October 2023, a separate ruling overturned the proscription of IPOB.
The lawyer wondered why the government has chosen to ignore these decisions, describing Kanu’s continued incarceration as a violation of the rule of law.
He urged Tinubu to obey the court orders and release the IPOB leader, asking pointedly if Kanu has become his personal prisoner.
He wrote: “In Jan. 2022, a Court ordered the Federal govt to pay Mazi Nnamdi Kanu N1b & apologize to him; In Oct. 2022, a Court nullified his detention & awarded him N500m; In Oct. 2023, a court ruled against proscription of #IPOB. Dear Pres. Tinubu, has MNK become your personal prisoner?”
