Arise Television journalist, Rufai Oseni has criticized the Tinubu government over its handling of the recent Kebbi schoolgirls’ kidnapping, questioning why the kidnappers were released instead of being arrested.

The outspoken host expressed disbelief and concern at the authorities’ approach to handling bandits and the broader insecurity in the country.

“So is it that you didn’t arrest them? You didn’t exchange fire with them? You negotiated with them so that they will go ahead and kidnap another person, just as they have done before?

I shoulder a righteous disbelief at what is really happening in Nigeria. You left the criminals, the bandits, negotiating with them as if they were business partners,” he said.

Oseni accused the government of treating criminals leniently and highlighted the lack of accountability in the situation.

He pointed out that while 24 schoolgirls were freed, the kidnappers faced no immediate consequences. He also questioned whether ransom was paid and whether the government, despite having superior firepower, should have negotiated at all instead of making arrests.

Oseni drew a stark contrast with the government’s treatment of Nnamdi Kanu, noting that while Kanu was jailed for inciting violence, kidnappers who held victims in captivity were merely negotiated with upon release.

“The same government jailed Nnamdi Kanu for life for inciting violence, but the people who kidnapped innocent schoolgirls and held them against their will are simply let go because they were negotiated with. Where is the justice? Where is the accountability?”

Rufai Oseni’s remarks underscore growing frustration in Nigeria over recurring kidnapping cases and question whether negotiation alone can ever serve as a proper solution to such crimes.
