Prof Offiong assumes office as 12th UNICAL VC

Professor of organic chemistry, Offiong Efanga Offiong, on Monday took the oath of office as the 12th Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar.

The investiture was held at the Godswill Akpabio Conference Centre within the school campus and was witnessed by arrays of dignitaries from the federal and state governments, as well as traditional, academic, business circles and the university hierarchy.

Offiong succeeds the first female VC, Prof Florence Obi, who has completed her tenure of five years.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 14th Governing Council school, former DIG Ekpoudom, said that many had thought that appointment of a substantive VC would not be feasible, but God made it possible.

He added that during his tenure, many key appointments have been made as a result of harmony between his council and the University management.

In his inaugural address, Offiong who is a former commissioner for education in Cross River State, pledged to lead with integrity, transparency and a listening ear.

“I will be a servant leader for the entire University community. We are prepared to challenge conventions, and where necessary, take firm actions to realise our objectives.

“There will be zero tolerance for indiscipline, including admission racketeering and fraudulent NYSC mobilisation.”

The new VC pledged to improve on security, rebrand the school as a centre of serious intellectual engagement.

He assured that his tenure will emphasize on investing in education.
