The Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, has called on all Efik sons and daughters, as well as other ethnic groups and residents of the state, to live in peace and celebrate this year’s Yuletide season—including Carnival Calabar, Christmas and the annual Utomo Obong cultural activities—in an atmosphere of love and harmony.

The monarch made the call at his palace in Calabar while formally proclaiming the official commencement of the weekly activities marking the 14th edition of Utomo Obong. The proclamation was witnessed by kingmakers, members of the Obong of Calabar Executive Forum, OCEF, and other dignitaries and guests.

As the Grand Patriarch of the Efik people and Defender of the Christian Faith, the Obong urged the people to shun acts capable of disrupting the festive season and the cultural celebrations.

“As I proclaim the official commencement of this year’s Utomo Obong, I urge all to embrace peace and desist from negative activities and vices that could disrupt the Yuletide season and our cultural festivities,” he said.

Commending the Efik people and the organising committee for their unwavering commitment to the annual cultural celebrations, the Obong invoked God’s blessings and protection on all participants and stakeholders.

He further disclosed that Utomo Obong has now been captured in the state government’s annual Carnival calendar, describing the development as a sign of progress and sustainability for the cultural heritage of the Efik people.

“I call on all indigenes and residents alike to seize this opportunity and come out en masse to celebrate. I also commend Governor Bassey Otu for the positive impact his administration has made on the lives of the people,” the Obong said.

“In view of this progress, I urge everyone to close ranks and give the government the necessary support to enable it pilot our dear state to greater heights.”
