Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced a ₦100 million donation to the Nigerian Legion to support veterans and families of fallen heroes.
The announcement was made yesterday during the 2026 Emblem Appeal Launch at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The donation marks a significant 150% increase from the ₦40 million contributed by the state in the previous year.

Fubara, whose late father was a soldier, emphasised that honouring those who secured Nigeria’s unity should be a continuous commitment rather than a mere “annual ritual.”
Fubara stressed that the government’s responsibility to veterans must involve deliberate actions that improve the quality of life for survivors and their dependents.
Key commitments made at the launch included the governor’s pledge to commence and complete a permanent state secretariat for the Nigerian Legion before the end of 2026.
He also addressed delays in a previous promise to employ 50 children of veterans, explaining that the holdup was procedural and urging the Legion to submit the final list to his office for immediate action.
In addition, the governor called on private organisations and individuals to fulfil their pledges to sustain the delivery of welfare programmes.
In a major boost to the state’s healthcare sector, Fubara also inaugurated the remodelled and expanded Ahoada Zonal Hospital.
The project ends years of abandonment that spanned multiple administrations.
The facility has been upgraded to a 105-bed ultramodern medical centre, specifically designed to serve the Rivers West Senatorial District.
The hospital is equipped to provide secondary healthcare services that were previously only accessible in the state capital, helping to de-congest the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).
The facility will feature new specialised units, including Surgery and Radiology services, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and modern delivery suites designed to support safe and efficient maternal care.
“Your health is important to us,” the governor stated during the commissioning. “No matter how much wealth you have, you need good health to enjoy it.”

During the event, the Commissioner for Health, Adaeze Oreh, revealed that healthcare attendance in the region has surged from approximately 407,000 to nearly 1.2 million patients annually.
She also symbolically presented the governor with a $1.5 million Primary Healthcare award won by Rivers State for its leadership in the sector across 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Fubara confirmed that while Bori and Ahoada hospitals are now operational, the zonal hospitals in Degema and Omoku are on track to be commissioned before the end of March 2026.
