Elon Musk has announced a new political party that he hopes will challenge the Republicans and the Democrats in the next election.

As we all know, Musk was a huge part of the Donald Trump’s 2024 election campaign, with the president recruiting the Tesla founder to the role of head of Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) upon his return to the White House in January.

Musk remained in the role up until the end of May, but things soon after turned sour between the former ‘best buddies’.

The pair’s feud stems from Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, with Musk dubbing it an ‘abomination’.

Dismissing that suggestion, Trump said he was ‘disappointed’ in the tech mogul and insisted that Musk knew the ins-and-outs of the bill before his departure from government.

Musk later took to Twitter alleging that the president is named in the Jeffrey Epstein files in a series of now-deleted Tweets, with the White House hitting back once more stating it’s an ‘unfortunate episode from Elon’.

The SpaceX founder has continued to criticise the Trump administration since then, and he has now set up a new political party in the hope of challenging the president.

Musk announced on Saturday (July 5) that he had set up the America Party, though it remains unclear at this stage whether it has been formally registered with US election authorities, BBC News reports.

There are also questions on who will lead the party as Musk – who is not born in the US – is ineligible to run for president.

This weekend’s news should hardly come as a surprise, considering Musk raised the prospect of a new political party on Twitter shortly after his feud with Trump began.

Referencing the poll he posted some weeks ago, Musk wrote on Twitter: “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

After months of boasting about and promoting his ‘one big, beautiful bill’, Trump found success earlier this week when the Republican-controlled House of Representatives approved the ‘beautiful bill’ with a 218-214 vote.

The bill is set to deliver tax breaks Trump promised when he was running for president in 2024, while also cutting health and food safety programmes.

The bill will target the health programme Medicaid, and could leave nearly 12 million people without health insurance, according to the Congressional Budget Office. It will also add $3.4 trillion to the US’s national debt over the next 10 years.
