The Kano State Government has set up an eight-member investigative committee to look into the controversial bail of an alleged drug baron, Sulaiman Aminu Dan Wawu, reportedly facilitated by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Ibrahim Ali Namadi.
The move, announced in a statement on Sunday, by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, comes amid public outrage and growing pressure on the state government to act.
The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Faruk Ibrahim, who inaugurated the committee on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Cabinet Office, said the committee has just one week to complete its assignment and submit its findings.
“The committee was set up to unravel the circumstances behind the bail of a suspected drug baron and recommend necessary actions,” said Alhaji Umar Faruk Ibrahim. “We are confident that this committee, composed of credible and competent individuals, will handle the task with utmost professionalism.”
The committee is chaired by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Justice and Constitutional Matters, Barrister Aminu Hussaini. Other members include legal professionals and individuals from civil society and academia: Barrister Hamza Haladu, Barrister Hamza Nuhu Dantani, the Director General of the Special Services Directorate Major General Muhammad Sani (rtd), civil society advocate Comrade Kabiru Dakata, and Professor Mamun Mustapha of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil.
Also on the committee are Alhaji Abdullahi Mahmud Umar, Commissioner II of the Civil Service Commission, and Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Mai Mota, Permanent Secretary, Administration and General Services in the Office of the SSG, who will serve as secretary.
Speaking on behalf of the committee members, Barrister Aminu Hussaini said the government acted at the right time.
“We appreciate the Kano State Government for responding promptly to this sensitive issue,” he said. “We assure the public that we shall carry out this task with a high sense of integrity, objectivity, and professionalism.”
The constitution of the committee follows public concerns over how a man accused of serious drug-related crimes secured bail, and the alleged involvement of a top government official in the process.
