The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that five people died and 55 others were injured following flooding in parts of Yola town, Adamawa State.
Ladan Ayuba, Head of Operations at the NEMA office in Yola, said the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the Modibbo Adama Teaching Hospital in Yola.
The flooding occurred on Sunday morning after a heavy downpour in Yola and its environs, submerging houses in several wards of the state capital.
Some of the affected areas, where boats are being used for rescue operations, include Tashan Sani, Shagari Phase II, Sabon Pegi, Anguwan Tabo, Modire, Ummare, Yolde-Pate, Sanda Fadama II, and Ibnu Abbas.
Personnel from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Red Cross, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) are collaborating with NEMA in the ongoing rescue efforts.
Ali Adam, a resident of Yolde-Pate, commended the efforts of the officials for coming to their aid.
Mr. Adam said they had never experienced such a situation in the area.
He also appealed to the state government to intervene and take action against a company he claimed was involved in mining activities in the area.
According to him, the flooding was not only due to the rain but also caused by a dam constructed by the company.
Yakubu Musa, a resident of Modire, urged the state government to upgrade a major culvert in the area into a bridge to enable it to accommodate larger volumes of water.
“There’s also a need to open up some waterways that have been blocked by people engaged in rice farming in the area,” Mr. Musa said.
Meanwhile, many displaced persons have begun taking refuge in emergency camps and primary schools.
