President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Super Falcons on clinching their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, Tinubu commended the team’s “spectacular performance and resilience.”
“The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit,” the statement reads in part.
“With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for. The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria celebrates you.”
Jennifer Echegini emerged the hero as the Super Falcons overturned a two-goal deficit to seal the WAFCON crown.
Echegini netted the decisive goal in the 88th minute to complete a spirited second-half comeback for Justine Madugu’s side, who had gone into the break trailing.
Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy had put Morocco two goals ahead in the first half. But the Falcons clawed their way back with goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Florence Ijamilusi, and Echegini to seal a dramatic and well-earned victory.
Nigeria remains the only nation in Africa to have lifted the WAFCON trophy 10 times.
