With millions of Nigerians expected to travel across the country for the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has mobilised its full operational force to guarantee safer roads and reduced crashes during the festive period.
The nationwide mobilisation follows a directive by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, who ordered the total deployment of personnel, patrol teams and operational assets under the Operation Zero Tolerance Exercise, a special end-of-year safety initiative aimed at curbing reckless driving and traffic congestion.
The operation, which commenced on 15 December 2025 and will run until 15 January 2026, is designed as an intelligence-driven, high-impact intervention featuring 24-hour patrols, strategic traffic control, rapid rescue response and strict enforcement of traffic regulations.
All FRSC formations according to the post shared on Saturday have been instructed to focus on major highways, crash-prone corridors, gridlock areas and key inter-state routes to ensure smooth and safe movement of travellers.
As part of the directive, Commanding Officers are required to ensure optimal use of patrol vehicles, ambulances, speed-limiting devices and other safety equipment, while maintaining high visibility of FRSC operatives on the highways.
The Corps Marshal emphasised that officers must demonstrate professionalism and firmness in their duties, warning that any form of compromise or laxity would be met with severe disciplinary action.
The FRSC boss declared zero tolerance for dangerous practices such as mixed loading and distracted driving, noting that vehicles carrying passengers alongside goods or animals, as well as drivers caught using mobile phones while driving, would be sanctioned without hesitation throughout the operation.
He also appealed to construction and road maintenance firms operating on major highways to ease traffic flow by opening up carriageways, removing unnecessary obstructions and ensuring proper traffic control at work zones, particularly during periods of heavy vehicular movement.
In addition to enforcement, the Corps has intensified public enlightenment campaigns, with personnel engaging motorists and commuters in motor parks, markets, religious centres and other public spaces.
Road users are being cautioned against speeding, drunk driving, overloading, dangerous overtaking and disobedience to traffic signs, which the Corps identified as major contributors to road crashes during festive seasons.
The Corps Marshal further called for stronger collaboration with sister security agencies, emergency responders, transport unions and community leaders to ensure prompt rescue operations and effective traffic management nationwide.
He said the effectiveness of the operation would be assessed by tangible outcomes, including a reduction in crashes, injuries and fatalities, improved travel time and increased public confidence in road safety enforcement.
Reiterating the Corps’ commitment to protecting lives, Mohammed urged motorists to take personal responsibility for their safety and cooperate with law enforcement officers, assuring Nigerians that the FRSC remains fully mobilised to deliver safer journeys throughout the festive season and beyond.
