Veteran Nollywood actress, Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has stirred conversation online after sharing a deeply personal account of her marriage, family life and views on commitment.
In a reflective statement shared on social media, Ozokwor revealed that she was married at the age of 19 through an arrangement made by her parents, describing the experience as frightening at first because it was not a union she chose for herself.
Commitment, sacrifice and motherhood
According to the actress, love eventually grew in the marriage, which lasted for 23 years. She disclosed that her late husband was ill for 15 of those years and passed away in 2000, after which she decided not to remarry, choosing instead to dedicate her life to raising her children.
Ozokwor explained that she had three biological children and adopted five others, noting that one of the adopted children later died, leaving her with seven children. She said her decision to remain unmarried was rooted in her desire to focus fully on her children and raise them with strong values.
Reflecting on modern relationships, the actress lamented what she described as a lack of commitment in today’s marriages, stating that people now spend too much time “fixing themselves” while marriages collapse. She added that she raised her daughters to be respectful and her sons to be responsible, insisting that divorce should never be an option.
Ozokwor emphasised that the strength of her home was built through hardship, love, respect and sacrifice, arguing that arranged marriages in her time often lasted because couples stayed committed regardless of challenges.
