The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has reportedly called on the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to revoke the contract for the Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi Road project, citing the contractor’s alleged poor performance and persistent delays in execution.
According to a leaked letter personally signed by Senator Barau and received at the Federal Ministry of Works on June 8, 2026, and obtained by DAILY POST, the lawmaker expressed serious concern over the pace of work by CGC Nigeria Limited, the company handling the multi-billion-naira project.
The Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi Road project involves the upgrade of the approximately 100-kilometre single carriageway into a dual carriageway to improve transportation and ease the movement of agricultural produce from rural communities to markets across neighbouring states.
In the letter, Senator Barau noted that despite substantial government funding allocated to the project, progress on the road has remained unsatisfactory, causing hardship for residents, commuters and businesses that depend on the corridor.
He stated that the project received N19 billion under the 2025 Appropriation Act and an additional N37 billion in the 2026 budget, yet significant milestones have reportedly not been achieved.
Describing the road as strategically important to the socio-economic development of Kano, Katsina and Kebbi states, the Deputy Senate President urged the Ministry of Works to carry out an immediate assessment of the contractor’s performance.
He further recommended that the contract be revoked if the contractor is found unable to meet expected project obligations, arguing that such action would serve the public interest and help ensure timely completion of the critical infrastructure.
