The organizers of the Ballon d’Or award have expressed their gratitude to Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, after he played what could be his last World Cup match.
Messi failed to inspire his country to win back-to-back titles, as they lost 1-0 to Spain in Sunday’s final.
The 39-year-old is widely expected to announce his retirement from international football in the coming days.
Even if Messi continues to represent Albiceleste, it is highly unlikely he plays at the 2030 World Cup.
A tweet on Ballon d’Or’s official X page on Sunday, wrote: “Simply… Thank you, Leo.
“Lionel Messi has played his final World Cup match.
“It was a journey filled with records, goals, and glory. Your legacy and your 8 Ballons d’Or are eternal.”
