Angel Reese‘s star is only getting brighter, and with the attention that comes from being one of the WNBA‘s biggest stars, handling the pressure can be a full-time job. Fortunately for Reese, she has a strong support system and a healthy routine to help her navigate it all. In a new interview, the Atlanta Dream standout says talking to the people she trusts, spending time reflecting, meditating, and journaling have helped her process her emotions instead of bottling them up, making it easier to avoid much of the outside noise.

While speaking with Cosmopolitan, Reese got candid about how she deals with some of the negativity that comes her way amid her growing stardom.

“I always have thick skin, but we all have emotions, and I think it’s important to value each emotion and take time with each emotion. And at a point, when you bottle it all up, you will explode,” she said.

Reese continued, “But having good people to talk to, sitting with myself, meditating, writing things down helps. A lot of things don’t really bother me as much anymore.”

Reese also said that she leans on her circle of friends and family to help keep her balanced and on track. “I focus on what’s real and what’s not. I’m mostly close to my family, and all of my friends are considered family to me,” she said.

Reese is one of the biggest names in the league, and with that level of visibility comes an equal amount of scrutiny. Most recently, she and Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers faced backlash after jokingly placing a $400 bet on their July 29 game. The interaction, which was shared by the WNBA’s official social media accounts, quickly went viral and sparked criticism, with some fans even calling for disciplinary action.

Reese, however, said she’s still learning how this thing called life works, especially for a young adult with so much influence. “It’s remembering I’m still a person that’s living this life for the first time. I’m only 24, and there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs, highs and lows,” she said.

“I try to stay in the moment as much as I can, because I’m only going to be young once. So just live, have a good time, have fun with everything, and enjoy experiences. I take a lot of pictures of things to capture memories,” she added.

How Has Angel Reese Dealt With Adversity Over The Years?

Before she ever stepped onto a WNBA court, Reese had already become one of women’s basketball’s most polarizing figures, largely due to the backlash surrounding her gesture toward Caitlin Clark during the 2023 NCAA National Championship game.

Since then, Reese’s journey has been anything but quiet. She was selected No. 7 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky, endured two challenging seasons with the franchise, and ultimately landed with the Atlanta Dream following a turbulent end to her second year in the Windy City.

Despite all of that, Reese knows how to handle tough times, saying, “Adversity builds character, and I think I’ve been able to build a strong sense of self.”

She added, “I think I built myself to not even be bothered by certain things. Or even if things do affect me, I let myself be affected for one second and don’t let one second ruin a whole entire day. It’s dealing with things and taking things with a grain of salt. A lot of things are by perspective.”

Reese Is Learning To Be ‘Intentional’ With Everything This Year

Being part of the Atlanta Dream has already been a 180 for Reese, considering the Georgia-based team is 17-10 just after the All-Star break and will more than likely be one of the eight teams competing in the first round of this year’s playoffs. The wins as a professional are new for Reese, given the Chicago Sky were 10-34 last year and tied for worst in the league next to the Wings.

Consequently, Reese is trying to be much more “intentional” during her third year in the league. “I’m just trying to take things day by day and live in the moment as best as I can,” she said.

“I told myself this year I was going to be a lot more intentional with celebrating each win, so I’m trying to be in the moment. I had to grow up fast, so everything came fast, and it’s been all about learning. I’m figuring things out as I go,” she continued.

Reese ‘Always Wanted To Have A Barbie’

Speaking of wins, Reese recently became the first Black woman in the WNBA to get her own Signature Barbie, according to The Blast.

The collectible captures Reese’s likeness perfectly, featuring a basketball jersey with both her professional and college numbers, a matching leg sleeve, and her signature Reeboks.

Reese told Cosmo that having her own Barbie is essentially a dream come true. “I always wanted to have a Barbie doll. I was called the Bayou Barbie [in college], and when I was younger, I had a good collection of them. I wanted something that resembled who I am, from the blush, the nails, the chains, the leg sleeve,” she said.

Reese said that the doll, which sold out at major retailers within days of its release, was designed with intention and praised Mattel for executing it “perfectly.”

“It’s really cool to see my vision come to life,” she said.
