Stefon Diggs is heading home after signing a one-year deal with the Washington Commanders following his stint with the New England Patriots.
Patriots fans flooded social media to thank the veteran wide receiver for his contributions while wishing him well in Washington. The move also marks a fresh start for Diggs, who returns to his home region after navigating several legal battles and a highly publicized split from Cardi B.
Stefon Diggs has a new place to call home after agreeing to terms with the Washington Commanders on a one-year contract, according to multiple reports.
The 32-year-old wide receiver joins the team as a free-agent signing five months after being released by the New England Patriots in March. The deal is reportedly worth $12 million, making it a relatively low-risk investment for Washington.
The move also brings Diggs back to his home region. He was born and raised in nearby Gaithersburg, Maryland, before starring at the University of Maryland.
The four-time Pro Bowler is expected to bolster a Commanders offense that already features star quarterback Jayden Daniels and standout receiver Terry McLaurin.
Diggs Celebrates Emotional Return Home
4In a video that quickly went viral following the signing, Diggs shared his excitement about the new chapter and gave a shoutout to his new team.
“Stefon Diggs here. I’m here at the first practice, the first fall practice,” he said. “They out here getting it in, man. Shoutout to my Terps, and go, Commanders. Let’s go!”
In a purported phone conversation with NFL insider Josina Anderson, he also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play close to home again.
“I’m just super blessed to have this opportunity,” he said, according to Anderson’s X post. “It’s been a long time coming. I’ve remained faithful to the process. Alignment is real, and here I am back home. I’m humbled and thankful to be back where it all started.”
Diggs Leaves Patriots After Productive Season
4The signing comes after a productive season with the Patriots, during which Diggs led the team with 85 receptions, 1,013 receiving yards, and four receiving touchdowns on 102 targets.
He also became New England’s first 1,000-yard receiver since Julian Edelman in 2019, helping the Patriots reach Super Bowl LX.
Diggs has now recorded eight consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons across stints with the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, and Patriots.
Despite those impressive numbers, New England chose to move on, instead trading for A.J. Brown during the offseason. Earlier this year, head coach Mike Vrabel also shut down speculation about a reunion.
“I don’t think that that’s something that, you know, that we are exploring, but I would never say no,” Vrabel said.
Fans Split Over Commanders’ Diggs Signing

Not everyone was convinced, however. “Commanders finally got their WR2… a 32-year-old who just got cut after one year and sat unsigned for months. Nothing says ‘we’re serious contenders’ like shopping the clearance rack,” one skeptical user wrote.
Diggs Looks To Move Past Years Of Off-Field Drama
4Diggs’ career has also been marked by several legal disputes, allegations, and high-profile personal drama.
Last year, online influencer Christopher Blake Griffith filed a complaint accusing the football star of drugging and sexually assaulting him in 2023. Diggs denied the allegations and responded by filing a libel lawsuit, claiming Griffith fabricated the story.
In September, Aileen Lopera filed a paternity lawsuit alleging Diggs was the father of her daughter. The claim was later confirmed through a paternity test, according to Page Six.
Diggs was also sued by his former personal chef, who accused him of assault. The case was resolved in May, and the NFL cleared him the following month, leaving him with no suspension heading into the new season.
The veteran receiver also endured a highly publicized split from rapper Cardi B, with whom he shares a son.
