An Illinois mother accused of killing her 2-year-old son was reportedly discussing the Lindsay Clancy murder trial in a group chat just hours before the child was found unresponsive inside their home. Corie Walsh, 40, faces three counts of first-degree murder in the death of her son, Barrett “Bear” Walsh. Her attorney now claims that Walsh was experiencing a psychotic episode when the tragedy unfolded. The startling group-chat detail creates a disturbing connection between the two cases, but court records do not establish that the Clancy trial caused Walsh’s alleged actions.

Prosecutors say an Illinois mom, Corie Walsh, got really wrapped up in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial.

Then they say she fatally strangled her own 2-year-old son, telling officers she did this to her son because he was the “devil”

Walsh’s attorney, Andrea Lyon, addressed the case in a statement released Friday night.

“This is a tragedy for the Walsh family, all of whom are mourning the loss of this child,” the statement began. “It is also a tragedy in that Corie herself was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time this happened. It is our hope that through a thorough presentation and investigation of the facts, that all of us will come to see this heartbreak for what it is.”

The statement presents Walsh’s mental state as a central part of the case. However, the assertion currently comes from her defense attorney and has not been established through a verdict or judicial finding.

Walsh remains accused of murder and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Court Filing Reveals Lindsay Clancy Group Chat

According to court documents obtained by NBC Chicago, witnesses told investigators that Walsh had recently become highly invested in Clancy’s trial. The filing alleges that Walsh was “actively discussing” the case in a group text with friends until only hours before Barrett was discovered. Police are reportedly conducting a forensic analysis of Walsh’s phone as the investigation continues.

The timing is significant because Clancy’s trial had become a national flashpoint over mental illness, postpartum psychosis and criminal responsibility. However, the group chat does not show that the Massachusetts proceedings influenced Walsh’s alleged conduct.

Investigators will likely examine the messages for evidence of Walsh’s state of mind, her activities before Barrett’s death, and whether she communicated anything that could help establish a timeline.

Prosecutors Detail The Scene Inside The Family Home

Police responded to the Walsh family’s Frankfort residence shortly after 4 p.m. last Tuesday following a report of an injured child. According to the prosecution’s petition seeking Walsh’s pretrial detention, officers arrived to find a neighbor performing CPR on Barrett in the front yard.

The neighbor reportedly discovered the toddler unresponsive in the basement before removing the ligature and attempting to save him. Court documents state that Barrett died from “asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck,” although police said the final cause and manner of death were still pending at the time of the report.

The neighbor also reportedly found Walsh upstairs in a bathtub “fully dressed, surrounded by bloody water.” Authorities allege that Walsh had injured herself with a knife. The neighbor removed the weapon and attempted to stop the bleeding by holding a towel against her thigh.

Walsh was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Prosecutors claim Walsh made disturbing statements about Barrett after she was hospitalized. According to the court filing, she allegedly admitted killing her son and said he was “the devil” and “the Antichrist.” Officials said Walsh’s account to investigators matched the evidence found inside the home. Her husband was reportedly out of state when the incident occurred.

An infant was also found unharmed inside the residence, while two school-aged children returned home as the emergency response was unfolding. All three of Walsh’s other children were physically unharmed.

The alleged statements about Barrett may become particularly important as Walsh’s legal team focuses attention on her mental state at the time of his death.

The Lindsay Clancy Connection Does Not Make The Cases Identical

Walsh’s alleged interest in the Clancy trial creates an unsettling parallel, but the two women face charges in different states and under different facts.

Clancy was accused of killing her three children at the family’s Massachusetts home in January 2023. Her attorneys argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and could not be held criminally responsible for her actions. Prosecutors maintained that Clancy had severe mental-health problems but still understood what she was doing.

Her trial ended in a mistrial after jurors could not reach a unanimous decision. The case sparked fierce public disagreement over where severe mental illness ends, and criminal responsibility begins. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington claimed 11 jurors supported acquitting Clancy while one male juror refused to join them. Judge William F. Sullivan declined to remove the juror after the foreperson alleged that he was not following the court’s instructions concerning reasonable doubt.

The judge determined that the information presented did not establish that the panelist had refused to follow the law.

The identities of the jurors who heard Clancy’s case will remain protected temporarily as scrutiny intensifies around the panel’s reported 11-to-1 division. Sullivan ordered the jury list impounded for 14 days, citing safety concerns following the emotionally charged proceedings. The jury consisted of nine women and three men. If Reddington’s description of the vote is accurate, all nine women supported acquittal.

Clancy remains charged despite the mistrial. Prosecutors can pursue another trial, negotiate a plea agreement, or decide not to retry the case.

Meanwhile, Walsh’s case is only beginning.
