Gillian Anderson is using her platform to draw attention to the devastating humanitarian crisis unfolding in Sudan.

The “X-Files” star shared a video urging her followers to support children affected by the country’s ongoing civil war. Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces began in April 2023 and has since created the world’s largest displacement crisis.

“The war in Sudan is devastating children’s lives,” Anderson said in the clip. She noted that the crisis does not always receive widespread news coverage despite children continuing to face violence and being forced from their homes.

Anderson then pointed her followers to the work of War Child, a charity that supports children affected by armed conflict worldwide.

“It is completely heartbreaking, but there is actually something that you can do,” the actress said. She explained that the organization is working in Sudan and neighboring countries, including providing protection and mental health support.

Anderson ended her message with an urgent appeal for support. “They cannot do it without us,” she said. “So please don’t wait. Donate to War Child today.”

While Anderson’s appeal drew praise online, it also reopened questions about her public stance on another humanitarian crisis.

Some social media users questioned why the actress was speaking so directly about Sudan while, in their view, remaining less vocal about Palestinians in Gaza. “So, talking about Sudan is no problem,” one Reddit user wrote before criticizing what they saw as a lack of similar advocacy for Palestine.

Others pushed back against the comparison. One commenter argued that Sudan should not be overshadowed by another conflict, stressing the scale of the suffering there. Elsewhere, users questioned why multiple humanitarian causes could not receive attention at the same time.

Anderson Addressed Israel-Palestine Controversy In 2023

Anderson previously addressed her position on Israel and Palestine after becoming caught up in a separate controversy in October 2023.

The actress pulled out of Web Summit in Lisbon after its then-CEO, Paddy Cosgrave, faced backlash for comments about Israel’s actions in Gaza. Cosgrave had written that “war crimes are war crimes even when committed by allies.” Anderson was among several high-profile names to withdraw from the event.

Days later, Anderson sought to clarify where she stood. “I don’t want there to be any misinterpretation – so let me be clear. ALL lives are valuable,” she wrote. “No one life is more or less valuable than another.” She also called for the protection of innocent civilians while condemning terrorism, saying the two positions were “not mutually exclusive.”

Anderson also has a new project arriving on screens. The 58-year-old actress stars in “Trespasses,” a four-part miniseries based on Louise Kennedy’s 2022 novel. According to Collider, the drama premieres September 20 across PBS platforms and takes viewers to Northern Ireland during the Troubles.

Lola Petticrew leads the series as Cushla Lavery, a schoolteacher whose life is shaped by the violence surrounding her small town. Anderson plays Gina, Cushla’s widowed mother, while Tom Cullen stars as Michael Agnew, an older, married Protestant barrister who becomes romantically involved with Cushla.

Early reviews have been particularly complimentary of Anderson’s performance. Collider described the role as another “career highlight” for the “Sex Education” star, praising the way she portrays Gina’s grief and struggles with alcohol.
