The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command says a gas plant fire at Liberty Junction, Byazhin, Kubwa in Abuja, was caused by a driver who allegedly drove against traffic and crashed into the facility.
The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, 27 September, 2026, by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh.
The statement said the incident occurred at about 6:30am on Sunday, September 27, 2026, after the Command received a distress call from a resident reporting a fire outbreak at a cooking gas plant.
According to the Police, officers from the Kubwa Police Division were immediately deployed to the scene, where they found the fire had spread to nearby shops and other properties.

The Police said the Federal Fire Service was contacted and responded to the scene, helping to contain the inferno.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of an unregistered Toyota 4Runner Jeep was allegedly driving against traffic when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the gas plant.
“The driver and occupants of the vehicle fled the scene immediately,” the Police said in a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh.
The Command said it had established the identity of the driver and launched a manhunt to apprehend him.
“While the Command is currently on the trail of the erring driver, having established his identity, the fire has been contained and no casualties have been recorded,” the statement said.
The Police added that the full value of property destroyed in the incident was yet to be determined.
