Said Alkali, the Transportation Minister has given an update on the Kaduna–Kano standard gauge rail project.
According to him, the project is now 53 per cent complete.
Speaking at the 2nd International Railway Conference on Monday in Abuja, Alkali said the project has recorded major progress under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to him, when President Tinubu assumed office, the Kaduna–Kano rail project stood at just 15 per cent completion, but it has now progressed to 53 per cent and is expected to be completed and inaugurated by December 2026
The Minister also gave an update on the Kano–Maradi railway line, noting that work on the 387-kilometre corridor, which includes an extension to Dutse, has advanced from five per cent to 60 per cent.
“The Kano–Maradi line will reach Katsina by December this year, and the entire project will be ready for inauguration by March 2027,” Alkali stated.
“The Kano–Maradi corridor is more than a railway project; it is a gateway to West Africa’s markets, opening access for Nigerian goods into the Republic of Niger and beyond,” he added.
