Yuletide: FCCPC cautions transporters against arbitrary fare hikes as fuel prices drop

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a stern warning to inter-city road transport operators against the arbitrary and unexplained increase in travel fares during the current festive season.

The warning follows a surge in consumer complaints across the country regarding sharp hikes in transport costs.

In a statement released by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, the Commission noted that these complaints are particularly concerning given recent reports of reductions in the pump price of petrol (Premium Motor Spirit) across various regions.

The FCCPC highlighted a disconnect between the current market reality and transport pricing.

While acknowledging that seasonal demand and operational pressures can influence costs, the Commission pointed out that fuel—a primary input—has seen price drops.

Recent market data indicates that major players like the Dangote Refinery have crashed pump prices to as low as ₦739 per litre across over 2,000 MRS stations, with NNPCL outlets also reportedly slashing prices to approximately ₦835 per litre.

“While fuel cost is only one of several input increases that are not properly explained or disclosed raise valid consumer protection concerns,” the statement read.

The Vice Chairman and CEO of the FCCPC, Tunji Bello, stated that the Commission has intensified its monitoring of market conduct and is actively engaging with transport unions, park managers, and operators nationwide.

While clarifying that price increases are not illegal in themselves, Bello warned that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018 prohibits certain practices. 

These include exploitative conduct, such as taking unfair advantage of heightened seasonal demand; inadequate disclosure, where operators fail to provide clear, accurate, and timely fare information before travel; and coordinated pricing, which involves collusion among operators to fix prices to the detriment of consumers.

“Culprits face stiff penalties where cases of violation are established,” Mr Bello cautioned.

FCCPC urged travellers to remain vigilant and protect their rights by following a few key steps. 

Passengers should always confirm fares before boarding or making any payments.

They are also advised to keep records of transactions, such as tickets or receipts, as proof of payment.

The FCCPC further encouraged travellers to report abuses or unfair practices through the official complaint portal or designated hotlines. Complaints can be submitted via the portal at complaints.fccpc.gov.ng or through the hotlines.
