A young Nigerian lady has stirred emotions on social media after sharing a heartbreaking experience with her mother.

In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @Teniola, she explained that she called her mum to talk about how exhausted she was with life, saying she wanted to come home and rest for a while.

However, instead of receiving comfort, the response she got left her deeply hurt.

According to her, the only thing her mother asked was what exactly she planned to come home to do.

In her words, she said

“I called my mum and told her how tired I am and that I just want to come home. All she could ask me was, ‘What are you coming home to do?”

She explained that the response made her feel unheard and unsupported at a moment when she desperately needed reassurance and warmth.

Her story has since sparked massive conversations online, with many people sharing similar experiences.

Some noted that many African parents struggle to respond emotionally, even when their children are clearly overwhelmed.

Reacting, one commentator wrote, “This is exactly how African parents talk. They don’t know how to comfort emotionally.” Another added, “I feel for you. Most times, our parents aren’t the best people to run to.”

Despite the mixed reactions, the lady said the moment made her realise that some people have family but still feel empty, especially when the place they expect comfort from feels unavailable.
