Main points of US–Iran deal emerge ahead of signing

The Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran will be signed on Friday at the Burgenstock resort in central Switzerland.

A major point of the deal, according to Israel’s Channel 12, mandates the cessation of U.S.-Iran hostilities and the fighting affecting their allies, including Lebanon.

Iran is expected not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons, with Tehran and Washington agreeing to address Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium in future talks.

Iran must maintain its current nuclear program during further negotiations, while the U.S. would avoid new sanctions and military buildups in the region.

Iran has committed to free and safe commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days; the U.S. would release frozen Iranian assets once the MoU is effective.

The U.S. would withdraw its forces within 30 days and lift all sanctions on Iran upon a final deal; a final agreement would include a $300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran.

The U.S. would also grant temporary sanctions waivers allowing Iran to sell oil during discussions. Additionally, the Gulf nations would liaise on maritime and shipping arrangements.

The U.S., Iran, and the Gulf states have indicated their commitment to the MoU mediated by Pakistan, though there are concerns about Israel amid its rhetoric regarding the deal. 

Israel’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, already declared his country’s position, saying, “We are not party to this agreement. It does not safeguard our security.”

On Tuesday, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central HQ said Israel had violated the Lebanon ceasefire 84 times in 48 hours, despite President Donald Trump announcing the conflict’s end.
