Amanda Knox knows what it’s like to be at the center of a highly publicized criminal case. The comedian spent years fighting to clear her name after being wrongfully convicted of murdering her roommate, Meredith Kercher, in Italy, before her conviction was ultimately overturned.
Now, Knox is drawing a connection between her own experience and that of Patrick Clancy‘s, who faced his share of scrutiny amid Lindsay Clancy‘s trial for the murder of their three children.
Amanda Knox has weighed in on the Lindsay Clancy case but focused her attention to the accused’s ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, and the public scrutiny he has faced. Knox drew parallels between Patrick’s experience and her own time at the center of a highly publicized criminal case.
According to Knox, seeing the public scrutinizing Patrick’s every action brought her back to how people dissected her behavior following the murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, in Italy, in 2007.
“There is no one ‘right’ way to react to trauma, or to grieve, but when the lens of suspicion falls on you, everything is wrong,” she wrote in the essay “Patrick Clancy Can’t Win” for The Free Press.
Knox highlighted that despite Patrick being cleared of wrongdoing by investigators early on in the Clancy case, online sleuths still vilified him even if the central question at trial was whether she was legally insane at the time of the killings and not whether she killed her children.
“While the court of law tried Lindsay, the court of public opinion tried Patrick,” Knox wrote.

In 2009, Knox and her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were found guilty of Kercher’s 2007 murder. She spent almost four years in prison before an appeals court overturned the conviction in 2011 and released her from prison. Italy’s Supreme Court completely exonerated her of the crime in 2015.
Another individual, Rudy Guede, was convicted for Kercher’s murder, and he served 13 years of his 16-year reduced sentence before he was released early for good behavior in 2021, per The Guardian.
Knox noted that the conspiracy theories about Patrick is a threat to his safety. “I can relate. For years, I have received very graphic and detailed death threats,” she wrote, adding that she had to seek help from the FBI.
More than 10 years after her name was cleared, Knox still gets threats from those who don’t believe her innocence.

Knox said that while there was a clear offender in Kercher’s case, Clancy’s situation isn’t straightforward.
“It’s very hard to see her as an intentional perpetrator… It is not hard to see her as a victim of her own malfunctioning mind, and of a healthcare system that ignored her repeated pleas for help,” Knox said. However, she noted that the murders of the three Clancy children “need a perpetrator,” which is why online sleuths are pointing fingers at Patrick.
According to Knox, Patrick is the “most entitled to rage and vengeance,” but she pointed out how he asked the public to forgive Lindsay just days after the deaths of his children.
“The trial in the court of public opinion never ends,” Knox concluded, adding that some will always find “evidence against” Patrick as he continues to live his life.

Patrick’s lawyer, Howard Cooper, issued a statement on September 8 and said “there will be consequences” for people spreading lies and baseless accusations against his client.
Cooper said the “destructive defamation campaign” against Patrick has affected his reputation and livelihood, apart from the death threats he has received. “Enough is enough – this spread of blatant and baseless falsehoods must stop,” he said, noting that authorities have been alerted, per CBS News.
As The Blast reported, Lindsay’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, also defended Patrick and called out people who are targeting him. “It’s horrific what this man has been going through, and he’s entitled to move on with his life,” he said.

Knox has become a strong advocate for the wrongfully convicted and participates in speaking engagements and fundraisers for awareness. She also authored two books that center on her arrest, prison experiences, and the aftermath of her exoneration.
In 2024, Knox started performing as a stand-up comic and often incorporates her wrongful conviction into her sets. While she uses comedy to process her own experiences, she has explicitly stated that Kercher’s murder will never be included in her stand-up routines. “I joke a lot about how I was vilified, but I don’t joke about her murder,” she said.
