Many viewers expecting to watch the ceremony from the opening moments instead found the Cowboys vs. Ravens NFL game still airing.
As confusion spread across social media, the official VMAs account attempted to calm viewers by posting, “Hold tight, the 2026 #VMAs will take off after the football game finishes. Live, coming up on CBS and streaming on Paramount+!”
The update did little to ease frustration. The broadcast ultimately began roughly 20 minutes late, meaning viewers missed the opening performance and the presentation of the first award.
As the night continued, criticism poured onto X. One viewer wrote, per the Daily Mail, “Getting the feeling this might be the last VMAs,” while another added, “There’s no shame in bowing out gracefully. Gotta read the room.”
Others were even harsher. “I thought it was just me, this sh*t is boring,” one user posted. Another wrote, “Honestly the VMAs have felt like a funeral for years.”
Perhaps the bluntest reaction came from a viewer who declared, “We say this every single year. Honestly just pull the plug.” Another simply asked MTV, “What was that?”

Rather than relying on a single performer, MTV assembled three artists from a younger generation, RAYE, Sombr, and Teddy Swims, to lead the tribute.
