Kansas City Chiefs star Rashee Rice recently spoke with the media about his 30-day stint in jail just weeks before the upcoming NFL season is scheduled to begin. According to the wide receiver, despite spending a month behind bars, it hasn’t altered his mindset coming into the season. His goal, like his headline-making teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, is to win.
Rice was released from a Dallas County jail just under two months ago and returned to the NFL field to get ready for work. He was sentenced to jail for allegedly violating the terms of his probation, which stemmed from his reported role in a car crash two years ago that left several people injured.
“It was a learning experience and a reality check,” Rice said before noting that his primary focus is on things he can control instead of worrying about things he can’t change. “Don’t focus on the past. Focus on what’s going on now. I’m doing [well] mentally.”
Rice’s time in jail was no walk in the park, considering he told the media that being locked away was “mentally tough.” Although he had ways to communicate with his teammates and athletic trainer, getting through his sentence was more than he bargained for. “Besides the hard times in there, I kept my mind right watching shows and as much [of comedian] Kevin Hart as I could to laugh,” he added.
Rashee Rice Ordered To Serve 30 Days In Jail For Allegedly Violating His Probation
For those who may be unaware, Rice was ordered to spend 30 days in jail by a Texas judge after he tested positive for THC, according to PEOPLE. Testing positive for the chemical compound violated the terms of his probation, which stem from a 2024 multi-vehicle accident in Dallas.
Rice was driving in a Lamborghini Urus alongside an acquaintance in a Corvette at speeds close to 120 mph in March 2024. At that point, they reportedly “lost control and the Lamborghini traveled onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles.”
Rice allegedly left the scene of the accident before later turning himself in to police. His reported actions prompted the NFL to suspend him for six games in 2025 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
The Kansas City Chiefs standout later issued a statement, according to the NFL, saying he planned to take full responsibility for his role in the crash. “I sincerely apologize to everyone impacted in Saturday’s accident,” he said.
Rashee Rice Has Had Eyes On Him Before Because Of His Mother
Rice has been in the spotlight before, according to The Blast, after his mother, Marsha Kearney, was charged with theft two years ago.
The woman, who was spotted wearing her son’s jersey on Ring doorbell footage, could be seen in the video bending down and allegedly stealing a package of Chappell Roan vinyls from her neighbor’s door.
While the case was dismissed in December 2024, Kearney was ordered to pay a $125 fine, complete a theft intervention program, and perform community service.
Rice Is Feeling Good Before The Season After Surgery
Shortly before Rice entered jail, the NFL star underwent surgery on his right knee, cleaning up debris that caused inflammation. During the press conference, Rice told the media that in jail, he did what he could to take care of his body.
“I was in there early in the morning until it was time for me to go,” he said. “I would stretch it, do some activation on it and then hit the weight room and jog, just condition and get the muscle fatigue going as well as my stamina.”
Rice Has One Thing On His Mind Ahead Of The Season
Rice is entering his fourth year in the league and the final year of his rookie contract. He rejoined the Chiefs just weeks before the team’s season opener on Monday, September 14.
“I’m 100% locked in on what’s going on now with the team,” he said. “I’m ready to go out there and dominate. I’ve got a good group of brothers behind me.”
