The Buffalo Bills’ new $2.2 billion home is already drawing criticism from fans, and the NFL regular season has not even begun. More than 51,000 people received their first look inside the new Highmark Stadium during the team’s scrimmage on Saturday, August 8. While the event gave fans an opportunity to explore the 61,108-seat venue, several attendees walked away questioning its obstructed sightlines, steep upper-level stairs and relatively small video screens. The early complaints created an awkward start for a stadium the Bills plan to celebrate throughout their inaugural 2026 season.
3The most serious complaints centered on seats in the upper deck that reportedly offered limited views of the field. Photographs shared on social media appeared to show railings and other structural elements blocking portions of the action from certain seats.
“Whoever designed the new Bills stadium … wasn’t very keen on detail,” one attendee wrote on X. “Imagine paying tens of thousands on PSLs [personal seat licenses] and season tickets and walk into a view like this…” Personal seat licenses require buyers to purchase the right to obtain season tickets for a particular seat.
Video Screens Draw Comparisons To ‘The Office’
Fans also took aim at the two video screens positioned at the stadium’s end zones. Some attendees felt the displays appeared too small for the size and cost of the new venue.
One social media user compared them to the tiny plasma television Michael Scott proudly displayed in his condominium on “The Office.” The joke referenced a memorable episode in which Steve Carell’s character showed off a small wall-mounted television that could barely extend from the wall.
The venue’s steep stairs also became a subject of concern, particularly in the 400 section. Videos and photographs shared online showed the sharp incline leading toward the highest rows. Some fans were further frustrated by reports that there are no restrooms at the top of the stadium, potentially requiring spectators seated in those sections to navigate the stairs repeatedly throughout a game.
New Highmark Stadium Includes Several Major Upgrades
Despite the initial criticism, the new Highmark Stadium includes a number of features created specifically for football in Western New York. The open-air venue has a natural grass field and an under-field heating system designed to help the playing surface withstand Buffalo’s famously harsh winters.
Its listed capacity is 61,108, although additional standing-room-only areas can reportedly accommodate more fans when necessary. The scrimmage attracted 51,807 attendees, providing the first large-scale test of how spectators would move through and experience the building.
Kansas City-based architecture firm Populous Holdings designed the stadium. The company has worked on numerous major sports venues around the world.
Buffalo Bills Plan Inaugural Season Celebration
3The Bills are preparing to make their Week 2 matchup against the Detroit Lions the official celebration of the stadium’s inaugural season. Players will wear their primary blue uniforms with a stitched jersey patch featuring the 2026 Inaugural Season at Highmark Stadium logo.
Additional home games will feature individual themes celebrating community causes, cultural heritage and the franchise’s supporters. Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers will recognize Hispanic Heritage and the team’s Huddle for Hunger initiative. The Bills will wear their Nickel City uniforms as the team and Wegmans raise awareness of food insecurity and support local hunger-relief organizations.
The Week 4 game against the New England Patriots will center on Crucial Catch, the NFL initiative promoting cancer awareness and early detection.
Thanksgiving Game Will Make Franchise History
3Buffalo’s Week 8 home matchup against the Baltimore Ravens will celebrate Native American Heritage and recognize the culture of the local community. The Week 11 game against the Miami Dolphins will feature the NFL’s Salute to Service initiative, honoring active service members, veterans and their families.
One of the season’s biggest events will arrive in Week 12, when the Bills host the Kansas City Chiefs in primetime. The matchup will be the first home Thanksgiving game in franchise history, giving the new stadium another opportunity to appear before a national audience.
For the Week 15 Saturday night game against the Chicago Bears, Highmark Stadium will receive holiday-themed branding while recognizing the year’s Inspire Change Changemaker.
The home schedule will conclude with a Week 18 matchup against the New York Jets. The Bills will wear their red alternate jerseys while celebrating the Play 60 health and wellness program and honoring standout high school football coaches from the Buffalo and Rochester regions.
