Almost one year after Charlie Kirk‘s death, Erika Kirk is opening up about the difficult process of rebuilding her life without her husband.

Charlie was 31 when he was fatally shot while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.

In the months that followed, Erika Kirk has had to cope with her own heartbreak while raising their children and adjusting to a future she never expected to face alone.

The immediate aftermath of Charlie’s death left Erika struggling to comprehend how she would move forward without him.

Reflecting on those first 24 hours in a New York Times guest essay titled “What I’ve Learned About Grief,” she described the experience as feeling “like a fever dream,” as the reality of what had happened began to sink in.

During that difficult period, Erika turned to Second Lady Usha Vance and admitted how uncertain she felt about facing what was to come.

“I don’t know how I’m going to do this,” she recalled telling Vance, according to a report.

Vance responded with an analogy about parents enduring the final chaotic minutes of a flight with restless children.

She said, “You know when you’re on an airplane with your kids, and you’re going to land in 15 minutes, but the kids are going crazy, screaming, throwing things, and then the plane lands, and the kids relax, and everything is fine again?”

Her advice to Erika was, “Just get through the next 15 minutes.” Those words stayed with the widow and became a way of approaching a future that initially seemed overwhelming.

Rather than trying to understand how she would manage the months and years ahead, she could concentrate on making it through one small stretch at a time.

Everyday Reminders And Family Milestones Made Charlie Kirk’s Absence More Painful For The Widow

Grief also followed Erika into the ordinary spaces she once shared with her husband. Familiar objects around their home became painful reminders that Charlie was no longer there. This included his toothbrush, towel, and the empty space on his side of their bed.

Her bedroom became particularly difficult to enter. “For months, I avoided my bedroom,” Erika wrote. Instead of forcing herself to confront everything immediately, she allowed herself to process individual memories at her own pace.

The passing months brought other difficult moments. Significant occasions for the family like birthdays and Thanksgiving made Charlie’s absence feel fresh again, turning events that would ordinarily have been celebrated together into reminders of what they had lost.

Erika also emphasized that the public figure people knew was only one part of who Charlie was. She wrote that, “To the world, he was Charlie Kirk. But to me, he was the love of my life. To our children, he was the center of their world.”

As the first anniversary of Charlie’s death approaches, Erika’s understanding of grief has begun to evolve.

The advice that once helped her simply make it through the next few minutes has taken on a new meaning as she tries to embrace life again.

“At first, I needed to survive the next 15 minutes. Over time, I’ve realized that Charlie would want me to live them,” she wrote.

That realization has allowed Erika to accept that continuing to mourn her husband does not mean shutting herself off from happiness. Instead, she is learning that both emotions can exist at the same time, particularly in the moments she shares with their children.

“I can miss him with every part of me and still laugh with our children,” Erika explained. “I can have a broken heart and still experience joy.” Nearly a year into her journey, she is learning to carry her loss while still allowing herself and her family to experience moments of happiness.

Erika also stepped into a major responsibility following her husband’s death, taking over leadership of Turning Point USA, the conservative youth organization Charlie founded and led.

She was named CEO and chair of its board of directors after the organization said Charlie had wanted his wife to succeed him if he died.

The board unanimously supported her appointment. In the days following the shooting, Erika had already made it clear that she intended to continue the work her husband started, promising to “make Turning Point USA the biggest thing that this nation has ever seen.”

Erika’s plans now include continuing TPUSA’s college campus tour, its AmericaFest conference, and Charlie’s radio and podcast show.

She has presented those efforts as part of preserving the mission the late right-wing influencer spent years building.

“My husband’s mission will not end, not even for a moment,” Erika declared, per NBC News. She also vowed that Turning Point “will become stronger, bolder, louder, and greater than ever.”

This signaled her determination to carry Charlie’s work forward while taking on her new leadership role.
