Meghan Markle once revealed that Kate Middleton made her cry shortly before her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018, but she never explained exactly what led to the emotional moment.
The Duchess of Sussex opened up about the incident during her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. According to Meghan, the disagreement happened while the two women were discussing the bridesmaids’ dresses for her wedding. According to reports, Meghan said it was actually Kate who made her cry, rather than the other way around. She also said the Princess of Wales later apologized and showed up with flowers and a note.
“I’ve forgiven her,” Meghan said during the interview.
Meghan Markle Said The Incident Changed Her Relationship With The Royal Family
Naturally, Oprah wanted to know what had happened between Meghan and Kate, but the former chose not to give the full story, saying it would not be fair to Kate to share those details. That left a lot of the incident unexplained. Viewers knew Meghan had been upset enough to cry and that Kate had later apologized, but they were never told exactly what had been said during the disagreement. The former actress also described the fallout as an important moment in her relationship with the Royal Family.
“The narrative with Kate… that’s when everything changed, really,” she said.
The comment only added to the interest surrounding the incident, particularly because the details behind it remained private.
Kate Middleton Apologized, According To Meghan Markle
Remember when Meghan Markle told Oprah that Catherine had actually made her cry before the wedding?Meghan said Catherine “owned it”, apologised, & brought her flowers and a note. She said she had forgiven her. Then, when Oprah asked what actually happened, Meghan refused to…— Queen Esther (@XOQueenEsther) September 12, 2026
Meghan’s version of events also made clear that the disagreement did not simply end with the two women falling out. She said Kate acknowledged what had happened and apologized, bringing flowers and a note with her. Meghan said she accepted the apology and had forgiven her. Years later, the story still gets brought up because so much of what happened that day remains unknown.
An X user recently revisited Meghan’s comments and questioned the way the story was presented. Queen Esther argued that saying Kate “owned it,” apologized, and that Meghan had forgiven her gave the audience a clear impression that the Duchess had been wronged, even though the actual details were never shared. That is an interpretation of the interview but does not establish what happened between the two women.
“There is a very big difference between saying something, implying something, and leaving other people to construct the most damaging version of what you meant. The first can be tested. The second can be examined. The third is much harder to challenge because there is never quite a complete accusation to answer,” the post read. “It allows Harry and Meghan to make very serious accusations while keeping themselves one step removed from the responsibility of actually making them. They can say enough to create the accusation, but not quite enough to be held fully accountable for it.”
Meghan Markle Also Spoke About Her Son Archie
The Kate story was not the only major revelation from Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah. Meghan also said there had been “concerns and conversations” about the color of Archie’s skin before he was born. She did not identify the person involved or explain the full context of the conversation. Oprah then asked Meghan whether the concern was that Archie would be “too brown” and that this would be a problem. Meghan replied that, if that was the assumption being made, it felt like “a pretty safe one.”
Harry later declined to reveal who had allegedly been involved in the conversation. As with the Kate story, some of the most important details were never made public.

The post revisiting Meghan’s interview with Oprah prompted royal watchers to weigh in on what happened with Kate.
One person stated that Meghan is “very highly manipulative,” adding, “In this case what is called Passive Aggressive,” while another commented, “Meghan never says what was said, who said it apart from this story and what the response was. She is a narcissistic liar as usual Harry. We’ve see it time and again.”
A third commenter added, “Machiavellianism in psychology is a personality trait defined by interpersonal manipulation, a cold and calculated focus on self-interest, and a lack of empathy or conventional morality… in other words Meghan Markle.”
The fourth one noted, “Meghan said the ‘conversations’ about Archie’s skin color happened when she was pregnant, then Harry said in the SAME INTERVIEW with Oprah that it happened when they had started dating. GLARING inconsistencies. They can never keep their stories straight.”
The old interview continues to spark debate, particularly because the details behind the disagreement remain unknown.
