Prince Harry is reportedly still angry with members of the royal family, years after he and Meghan Markle left Britain and stepped back from their official duties.
According to a new report, people close to the Duke of Sussex claim he continues to want an apology from his family. The claims come as the couple settles back in the UK with their children.
Prince Harry and Meghan’s return has also brought renewed attention to his relationship with his father, King Charles III, and his estrangement from Prince William.
According to The Standard, friends of Harry claim he is “just as angry” with his family as he was when he left Britain in 2020.
The outlet reported that people close to the prince believe his feelings toward the royal family have not changed significantly.
One source described Harry as still being in “that Oprah mindset,” referring to the period after his and Meghan’s 2021 interview with talk show legend Oprah Winfrey, during which the couple discussed their experiences within the royal family.
The report did not identify the friends by name. It also linked Harry’s current feelings to complaints he has made over the treatment of him and Meghan before their departure.
The prince’s anger is said to remain focused on issues that were discussed publicly after the couple left royal duties.
The Duke Still ‘Expects An Apology‘ From The Royals
Besides reportedly still being angry, Harry continues to expect an apology from members of his family.
Those close to the Duke of Sussex believe he has also accused royal aides of trying to damage his relationship with King Charles.
“They were agog to hear he still feels angry with members of the Royal Family, is still frustrated by the ‘men in grey suits’ who surround his father, and still expects an apology,” the source told the Standard.
In 2023, Royal historian Gareth Russell shared that Harry strongly believes he is owed “an unequivocal apology,” according to comments he made to Us Weekly.
However, he stressed that he doesn’t “think the royal family believes he deserves one.” The expert explained that the royal family does not view responsibility for the rift as entirely one-sided, as they “don’t think it’s quite a 100 to zero percent balance of the blame.”
Russell added at the time that they “don’t believe he merits an unequivocal apology.” It is still unspecified what form of apology Harry is seeking or which family members he expects to make one.
Prince Harry Previously Spoke About Reconciliation
Harry has previously spoken publicly about wanting to repair his family relationships. In a 2025 interview with the BBC after losing his security fight, he admitted that he would “love reconciliation” with his family.
He also discussed the possibility that some members of the royal family might never forgive him, saying: “Of course some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book. Of course they will never forgive me for lots of things, but I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore.”
In June 2026, OK! Magazine also reported that the Duke of Sussex was hoping for reconciliation with his father and brother, citing royal commentator Dan Wakeford.
At the time, the outlet quoted Wakeford saying Harry “wants a reconciliation” with King Charles and Prince William.
The Duke’s Return Has Put Family Tensions Back In Focus
Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain has brought the family situation into fresh public focus. The couple moved back to the UK in August with Archie and Lilibet after spending about six years in California.
King Charles was reportedly told about the move only days before it became public.
Shortly after their arrival, Harry and Meghan were left “surprised” by a letter from the King confirming that they remained non-working members of the royal family.
The letter was sent to senior British officials and reiterated the arrangement established after the couple stepped back from royal duties.
Harry had also remained in contact with his father since returning, but after a reportedly “heated” call between the father and son over the “private citizen” label used to describe him and his wife in the king’s letter, sources claim direct contact has been cut off.
The two are believed to have communicated during the first week of the family’s arrival, although the details of their conversations have not been made public.
Prince Harry And Meghan Remain Non-Working Royals
The king’s letter made clear that Harry and Meghan’s return does not restore their former working-royal status.
According to the letter, the couple remain private citizens and cannot use the HRH style, while their charitable activities are conducted privately.
The letter explained that the arrangement Harry and Meghan reached with the late Queen Elizabeth in 2020 allowed the couple personal freedom, particularly when it came to maintaining financial independence and protecting their privacy “as they would wish.”
“It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” the letter stated.
It also clarified that “The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity.”
“In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests,” the letter added, confirming that their return to the UK did not alter their existing status outside the working royal family, per Reuters.
The development comes as Harry continues public work through projects such as the Invictus Games, while his family establishes a longer-term life in Britain.
Their security arrangements are also being reviewed by the UK authorities following the move.
