Tension has erupted in Ekpoma after a court ordered the remand of 52 Ambrose Alli University (AAU) students over alleged role in a protest against kidnapping and worsening insecurity in the Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to reports obtained from Ijeomadiary, the students were arrested late at night from different hostels across Ekpoma following a protest held last Saturday.
The demonstration was organised to draw attention to the growing cases of kidnapping and worsening security situation in the community, with residents alleging that several victims had been abducted directly from their homes.
Students who spoke with SaharaReporters said the arrests were carried out in a coordinated operation.
They alleged that police officers stormed multiple hostels in the middle of the night and arrested students indiscriminately.
Following their arrest, the students were arraigned in court and subsequently remanded in prison custody for 14 days.
The development has heightened tension within the Ambrose Alli University community, as concerns continue to grow over insecurity in Ekpoma and the treatment of students who speak out against it.
